Previous to Captain Seavey's entering the Navy, he had seen many years of service as a Captain in the Merchant Marine Service. Pondera's second commanding officer, Captain Morris Seavey, USNR, veteran with battles of the sea-veteran of battles against our common foe, assumed command of the USS Pondera, on the 2nd of August 1945, and remained in command until the 24th of December 1945. When he returned to the West Coast in July, 1945 Captain Hasse was assigned to the command of the USS Pondera, and remained as commanding officer until the 2nd of August 1945. When he returned from Alaskan duty on the Rio Grande, Captain Hasse was ordered to Baltimore and assigned to the USS Chikaskia as commanding officer, and with this ship he reported to the Pacific in 1944. In May 1942, Captain Hasse took over the post of Executive Officer of the USS Big Horn, followed by his assuming command of USS Rio Grande in February 1943. Following this assignment he was sent to Norfolk, VA., as Assistant Captain of the Port. In January, following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, Captain Hasse entered active duty, and he was assigned as examination officer for the Chesapeake Bay Area. At that time he was already a veteran of many years experience in the Merchant Marine. Hasse, USNR, received his first appointment as Ensign in the United States Naval Reserve in 1928.
